What i mean is, the author appears to have come up with an interesting high concept, plotted out a series of events and then inserted a cast of characters to play them out.

One thing to keep in mind with your story of one: They are either smart or they are dumb blockbusters. They don't plan so much but write from the seat of their pants and let the characters dictate the direction of the story).
